Go the Distance to Catch a Nebraska Football Game

Nebraska football started in 1890, and it has been a statewide tradition ever since. I’ve attended a game or two (our daughter Lex attended college there), and that’s why I’m here to suggest that you and your besties put this on your list as a potential girls weekend. “Game Day” at the University of Nebraska is like nothing you've ever seen before. It’s a sea of red—sweatshirts, hats, pants, face paints, overalls, cars, trucks. You name it, it’s red! Hence the slogan, GO BIG RED! 




The mascot’s name?  Lil’ Red. He’s a big, dark-haired, big-eyed, smiling character who wears red and white striped overalls and bounces along the sidelines. Can you tell who’s the mascot in this picture?


As this picture shows, my daughter Lex (second from the right) and her girlfriends highly recommend it!


Spending your girls weekend in Lincoln on a Husker home game, but I assure you, it’s a fun adventure if you want something a little different. Here are some great options for things to do and places to stay.


What to Do


  • University of Nebraska football game,  Lincoln | U of Nebraska is among the most storied programs in college football history. Nebraska claims 46 conference championships and five national championships (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997), and has won nine other national championships that the school does not claim. NU's 1971 and 1995 title-winning teams are considered to be among the best in college football history. Famous Cornhuskers include Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch, who join 22 other Cornhuskers in the College Football Hall of Fame. Notable among these are players Bob Brown, Guy Chamberlin, Tommie Frazier, Rich Glover, Dave Rimington, and Will Shields, and coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne.

  • Glacial Till Vineyard, Palmyra | Game on Saturday, a gorgeous vineyard on Sunday.  This place is only 15 minutes from Lincoln, so it’s an easy outing. You and your girlfriends can stroll in the vineyard and enjoy the rolling hills, creeks and ponds. During the summer season, they offer live music, food, and local craft brew features too. Whatever you and your girls do, you will be convinced that Glacial Till Vineyard is a special place

  • Ashfall Fossil Park, Royal |  No matter what age you and your friends are, these fossils have you beat! Nearly 12 million years have passed since the volcanic ash buried the area. You don’t have to travel all the way to Pompeii to see the marvels of paleontologists digging and preparing the fossils to be unearthed.

    Where to Stay


    • Hipark Villas, Lincoln |  As I’ve said before, my girls and I prefer an Airbnb or VRBO for our girls weekend lodging. Here’s a good one for you and three of your besties. The new villa style apartments  will comfortably accommodate up to 4 (and a fully stocked kitchen where you can make the corn chowder in this week’s Let’s Eat!). It’s a great location too—just minutes away from the airport, downtown, and across the street from one of many of Lincoln’s bike paths.

    • Magnolia Hotel, Omaha  |  I told you how the Ashfall Fossil Park is a good option to Pompeii. Well, staying at the Magnolia will give your girls weekend group the feeling of staying in Florence. Built in 1923, it was designed to mirror a palace in that Italian town, but walk out the lobby door and you’re in the warm hospitality of all that downtown Omaha has to offer.
